saluting the merch mart
This thing is crazy. I see it almost everyday and I can’t get enough. When it was built in 1930 it was the largest building in the world and to this day remains one of the largest. But it’s so much more than a monstrous structure. The Mart possesses a personality that I am so attracted to. It doesn’t make excuses for anyone. It stands on the bank of the Chicago River and just looks good. It’s massive, but it doesn’t scream for attention. Well sometimes at night, when its flooded with multicolored lights, it does command a bit of attention. But in my opinion it’s subtle about it. Here’s to 79 years of looking good Merchandise Mart.
